I still think about a little apple tree that grew along one of the paths through the forest near my grandparents’ house. My family would go there looking for mushrooms and anything else we could bring home for dinner. The forest felt generous when I was a child.

There were familiar paths, damp earth under our shoes, baskets in our hands, and my grandparents knowing exactly where to look. We always kept an eye on the time, though. Whatever we found had to make it home before dark.
